Budget Beauty

Looking department store great for drugstore prices . . .

Ever since I was little, I had an obsession with makeup. For as long as I can remember, my mother has always worn this brown cocoa lipstick that I think looked so beautiful against her light Asian skin. When I was younger, when I thought I wouldn’t get caught, I could be found scrounging through her makeup drawer ready to pile on this colorful good stuff. I would look in the mirror and imagine I was a Hollywood star or something equally as fabulous. I have since then grown to become quite modest when it comes to my makeup routine, but I have never let go of my love for beauty products. But sometimes I get overwhelmed with all the products and brands out there that promise to give you the perfect lips, sultry eyes, and a flawless complexion. I really would love to try all these products out, but really, how much makeup can one girl’s beauty bag handle?

Through a long period of trial and error, I have come to rely on just a few basic products that can take me from day to night in a snap. I don’t have to spend a fortune to get the look I want, and neither do you. When it comes to skin care, I usually don’t mind dropping bigger bucks because my skin is my canvas, and I want it as smooth and clear as possible. But when it comes to makeup, I know I can get a better deal for the same high-priced results. Gone are the days when I used to think the more expensive the product, the better quality. As a recent college graduate with school loans and the burden of rent hanging over her head, I know what it means to live on a budget. And this includes my beauty routine.

I love to experiment with new looks all the time, but my everyday look is always natural, clean, and sometimes updated with a pop of bright lipstick or a soft smoky eye. I know what products work for me, and most of them come from pocket-friendly brands we all know, like Cover Girl and Maybelline. I want to share with you my favorite makeup products for a budget-conscious beauty look that you can wear anywhere.

When it comes to foundation, I have tried so many different brands that it’s not even funny. Some swear by high-end products like LancĂ´me or Chanel, but I love Cover Girl Aquasmooth Compact Foundation because it goes on like liquid foundation without looking heavy or getting greasy. It acts like a tinted moisturizer by providing sheer coverage while still masking imperfections, and giving me a dewy and healthy glow just the way I like. With added SPF 15, this bargain buy is a must-have. For areas that need a little more coverage, I use Cover Girl Smoothers Concealer Stick. It’s moisturizing, never cakey, and blends flawlessly with a few taps of my fingertips.

Because I like a dewy complexion, I find that a cream blush is best for me; it can even second as an eye shadow for a quick fix. I use Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush in Rose Petal. It’s a light and fluffy whipped blush that gives me a natural flush. It’s just as good, and maybe even better, than any pricey blush.

Like my cream blush, I equally love cream eye shadows because they don’t crease as much as their powdery counterparts. Cream eye shadows last long and blend easily with your finger, making them virtually mistake-proof. I prefer Cover Girl Eye Enhancers 1-kit Shadow in Golden Sunrise. Its reflective particles really make my eye color pop. For eye liner, I stick with the brand NYX (found at drugstores) because they go on smoothly and never smear. They are a deal for only $3.50 a pop and come in a wide range of colors.

When it comes to lip color, I like to get a little more outrageous. I love Maybelline’s new line of Color Sensation lipsticks. They are highly pigmented and super creamy because of a sweet infusion of honey nectar. They even smell delicious. For lip gloss, I also stick with Maybelline’s Color Sensation line. The quality and price just cannot be beat. When I want just moisture and shine, I have always relied on Rosebud Salve by Rosebud Perfume Co. It’s a little more expensive than drugstore lip balm, but still affordable. And it is well worth it because it really does work! For all the pretty lipsticks I hope you will be picking up at the drugstore after you read this, I know you will need healthy, smooth lips, and this no-fail balm does just the trick of preparing them.

These are the products that I use every single day to achieve an effortless, nearly bare face. These versatile products are aimed at a wide variety of skin types because they provide us with out basic needs: Coverage, moisture, and definition. The best thing about them is not just the fact that they are all within my budget, but that they can stand up right next to their more expensive counterparts and say, “I do just the trick, too, and maybe even better!”
