Fall 2010 Footwear Trend: Flat Loafers

Published Aug 30th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

With Fall 2010’s practicality, comfort, and masculine influences when it comes to clothes, it only makes sense that shoe styles would reflect this. There is nothing more comfortable than a flat and boyish leather loafer - but this season’s version isn't the same kind your grandpa wears. With a structured shape and luxurious leather outer sole, this shoe can stand up against the runway’s highest wedges, with twice the charm.

Pair them with ankle socks and a high-waisted skirt for a preppy look, or go sockless with ankle baring trousers for a chic European look. Or wear them with both socks and the ankle length trousers (hey, Michael Jackson made this look famous) Understated, classic, and fully functional, the flat loafer is autumn’s hottest hit for your feet.

So give your feet a break from skinny stilettos and 6” platforms - your soles will thank you.

Published Aug 29th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

Michelle Williams has captured our hearts as the girl next door from Dawson’s Creek, and has blown us away with her acting skills in more dramatic movies like Brokeback Mountain, Wendy & Lucy, and Shutter Island alongside Leonardo Dicaprio.

Ever since the death of her ex, Heath Ledger (whom she met on the set of Brokeback Mountain) Michelle and their daughter, Matilda, have been hounded by paparazzi. And while it would have been more respectful for photographers to have given this family privacy during such a hard time, it has given us a peek at Michelle’s fashionable choices, as well as Matilda’s. Fortunately, Michelle and Matilda have come a long way since Heath’s death, and are out and about looking happy and fashionable as ever.

It’s hard not to smile when catching a glimpse of Michelle’s urban-hipster-practical-mom look. It can be hard for a mother with a feisty daughter always by her side to look fabulous on a daily basis, but Michelle is a prime example of dressing for both function and form. From floral baby doll dresses layered under denim jackets to vintage Levi’s jeans tucked into comfy combat boots, Michelle dresses so she can chase after Matilda while still looking young and chic. Published Aug 26th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

Jessica Biel has come a long way from her fresh-faced 7th Heaven days, and is now one of Hollywood’s most sought after actresses. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that superstar Justin Timberlake is her boyfriend. Lately, she has been crazy busy making her way around the world to promote her new movie, The A-Team.

She is nothing less than a vision of perfection on the red carpet with her toned arms, flawless skin, and unbelievably symmetrical features. Her beauty is topped off with her gracious and down-to-earth personality, making it nearly to impossible not to notice Biel wherever she is, on or off the red carpet.

Whether she’s biking with Timberlake, or hitting up one of LA’s best restaurants, she’s got the whole casual chic look down like no other. A self-proclaimed sporty girl at heart, she feels most like herself in a pair of worn in jeans and a t-shirt, but she can also rock a mini skirt or yellow Phillip Lim two-piece suit like its second nature.

Fall 2010 Trend: Equestrian Style

Published Aug 26th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

No picture sets the mood for fall better than one of an elegant young lady on top of a majestic horse riding through a forest of golden leaves. Close your eyes and imagine this. It’s like something you would probably only see out of a movie or read in an old British novel, since not many of us are horse riding aficionados in real life.

But even if you cannot actually act the part, why not look the part? Old school equestrian looks were striding down the fall runways in full form, and the only thing missing was the actual horse itself.

Christian Dior showcased a classic equestrian look with a masculine touch, A.F. Vandevorst went for a sleeker and more minimalist route, and Hermès redefined the classy lady in a long skirt who sat sideways on her horse. Billowing jodhpurs, aged leather knee high riding boots, oversized top hats, and single-breasted hacking jackets were amongst the pieces that made up fashion’s interpretation of the English preference for all things equestrian.

When trying to incorporate this trend into your everyday wardrobe, rather than going for a head-to-toe galloping through the woods look, stick to just a few horse-riding inspired pieces at a time. Going full on with this trend will make you like like you're leaning more towards a Halloween costume, but pairing sleek riding pants with a simple slouchy top and blazer looks chic.

If you’d like to wear a pair of riding boots, skip the jodhpurs and go with a pair of distressed denim and a preppy plaid jacket in a masculine shape instead. Or pair a hacking jacket with a slim body conscious mini skirt. You’ll look ready for the saddle, yet edgy at the same time. Mixing modern pieces with these traditional English accessories keeps everything in style proportion.

Prepping Your Hair for Fall

Published Aug 24th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

Once fall and winter rolls around, it usually means that an entire new routine must take place when it comes to taking care of your hair. The weather change is the new season’s number one reason for hair damage, as well as increased use of the heater. Cold air and heaters strip moisture from your locks, leading to breakage while taking away that sun and sea-kissed shine you built up over the summer.

To keep locks in check well into the darker days of winter, when hair is known to be at its dullest, take the extra step with a deep moisture mask to lock in that much needed moisture to keep your hair healthy, strong, long, and shiny. The more moisture you can keep in your strands, the more beautiful, lustrous, and manageable your hair will be.

In the end, life will be made much simpler because the less time you spend on your hair in the morning, the more time you have to spend contemplating what you’re going to wear in the morning, and it is so true that we can all use a lot more of that!
So why not get started now with these great moisture rich products on the market right now, to get your hair in shape to beat the fall and winter blues that are soon to come.

Angela Lindvall: Model Profile

Published Aug 24th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

It’s not very often that you find a model that is able to stick around in the business for more than 15 years. Angela Lindvall is one of these rare beauties, a versatile mix of commercial and high fashion potential that never seems to fade.

With her long limbs, athletic figure, sparkling blue eyes, and shaggy blonde hair, she conjures up images of a young Cheryl Teigs, as well as the reigning period of the 90’s supermodel. Though she looks like a California surfer girl, this All-American stunner was actually born and raised in Oklahoma by two medical parents.

As a young girl, she had no aspirations to become a model, even though her younger sister, now deceased, did. With the help of a quick growth spurt and the encouragement of her friends, Angela decided to give modeling a try. She went on to be discovered at the age of 14 at a local fashion show, and signed with IMG, one of the world’s largest and top agencies, soon after.

Angela quickly went on to establish herself as a cover girl bombshell, lending her doe-eyed face to leading magazines such as ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Numero, Vogue, and W. She’s walked nearly every big time runway show known to mankind, as well as being a top choice for the always exciting Victoria’s Secret shows. Angelina is also the queen of the campaigns, appearing in ads for brands such as Fendi, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Prada, Gucci, Jil Sander, Jimmy Choo, Chanel, Versus, CoverGirl, H&M, and Zara, as well as the new DKNY Pure fragrance campaign.

Angela is just one of those girls who appeals to all kinds of clients and consumers, both high fashion and high street.

With just a crack of a smile, she’s the girl next door, and with a jut of her hip she’s a Sports Illustrated star. With a narrowing of her eyes, she transforms into a sexy sidekick. From youthful and fresh to mysterious and sleek, Angela’s got all characters covered. Because of this, she is the epitome of supermodel status, and it is the reason why she is still working today, like she did when she was 17.

Angela is also a devoted environmentalist and vegetarian, using her fame and industry connections to make positive changes for the planet.

She founded the College Foundation to promote environmental and sustainability issues amongst young people. Her sharp sense of style has also brought her to collaborate with brands like Edun, and the jewelry line John Hardy, to help design special pieces with eco-friendly values in mind. The proceeds of her designs are to be donated to environmentally charged charities that Angela fully supports.

Angela is a beautiful woman, inside and out. She is able to juggle all the very different aspects of her life as a mother, environmentalist, and model, keeping it all in balance. She is also a sister, although her younger sister, (also a model and environmentalist) died in a bike riding accident a few years ago. Even though her sister is no longer here, Angela keeps her legacy alive through her own work.

She is a model with a heart and an open mind, and this is what makes her an icon. Though she’s at the peak of her career, we can be sure there will be a lot more to come from the amazing Angela Lindvall.

The Return of Bell Bottoms

Published Aug 18th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

It looks like the decade defining trend of the sixties and seventies is ready to come back into the spotlight: the bell bottom pant.

This extreme shape of bell bottoms is a refreshing turn from the skinny leg style that has taken over the denim world in the past few years. Skinny pants are chic, but everyone from preppy students to punk rockers are wearing them, and their overexposure is starting to feel monotonous.

Bell bottoms scream for attention and break the cycle of getting stuck in the usual fashion rut. Some people are too scared to try this trend for fear of looking short or stumpy, but bell bottoms actually lengthen and slim your legs!

And since bell bottoms are all about shape, accentuate your figure by finding a pair of bell bottoms that hug your curves everywhere on top before flaring out right below the knee. Also, don’t be afraid to go extra wide. The wider the flare, the higher your heels should be, and the longer your legs will look!

The new fall season is all about experimenting and trying something new, and bell bottom denim is the easiest and freshest way to start. Complete this sixties throwback by wearing a pair of platforms heels, a fur trimmed jacket, and John Lennon-esque circle sunnies with your flares, and you’ll look just like the beautifully beaming Kate Hudson in Almost Famous. People may do a double take on the streets, but that’s only because they want to be you (and they want to know where you got your jeans from).

Dree Hemingway: Get the Look

Published Aug 17th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

Dree Hemingway is a breakout star in the fashion world. With her intense gaze and razor sharp bone structure, designers and photographers flock to work with her as if she has some sort of magnetic attraction to being in the spotlight.

Her great-grandfather is the legendary writer and ex-patriot Earnest Hemingway, and her mother is the famous Mariel Hemingway. Her heritage mixed with the sense of confidence she exudes makes her even more intriguing.

What is equally intriguing is her sense of style. While her red carpet looks are designer couture heaven, her everyday look is layered to the max, minimalist, and sleek. For Dree, less is always more, and shape is the most important.

Because of her background in ballet, the way she wears clothes and carries herself is graceful and gentle, resulting in a look that never looks too contrived.

Her wardrobe is made up of key and classic essentials, like black leather pants, boyfriend blazers, and Chanel ballet flats that she is not afraid to wear both on and off the red carpet. It's hard to make something as conservative as a white shift dress look photo worthy, but for Dree this is something that is effortless.

Her natural and creative talent as a model mixed with her innate sense of Parisian chic style makes her one hot property in the industry - one worth stealing tips from.

Florence Welch From Florence and the Machine: Get the Look

Published Aug 13th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

Florence Welch is the musical brainchild behind English pop/rock band Florence and the Machine. This bright-eyed songstress lights up a stage and captivates an audience with her fiery red hair, soulful yet raspy vocals, and electrically charged lyrics.

Her onstage ensembles are known to be extravagant and overly embellished, much like her music. Though seen as conservative when compared to the likes of Lady Gaga, her performance look is her own, made up of intricately pieced gowns and dresses.

Her off stage style is much tamer, but still imprinted with a quirky, character-driven vibe that has the fashion world taking notice. Florence gravitates toward a more masculine aesthetic rather than the more romantic looks she goes for while performing. She mixes boyish pieces like oversized blazers and beat-up brogues with vintage dresses, lacey tops, and patterned mini skirts.

She is one not afraid to experiment or get creative, putting together unexpected color combinations like baby blue and metallic pink, and wearing slightly oversized and exaggerated shapes, like a padded shouldered jacket over a body-conscious dress. Like her music, the sky is the limit with her clothing options, and nothing is ever out of bounds. Find out how to recreate two of Florence’s standout looks below.

Fashion in Film: When Harry Met Sally

Published Aug 13th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

There is no movie that better portrays fall fashion in New York City than famed 80’s romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally. Not only was the movie’s fashion styling choices remarkably memorable, but so were its characters. From Meg Ryan’s big, baby blue eyes to Billy Crystal’s sense of humor, there is hardly a reason to not be moved by the movie’s plot of undiscovered love in the city.

But back to fashion. Every fall, fashion magazines talk about layering, menswear, and nature-inspired color schemes as trends that keep coming back during this time of the year. Meg Ryan’s character, Sally, is the perfect example of autumnal dressing. She was hardly fond of skirts, and gravitated towards loosely fitted wool knit pants, tweedy structured blazers, button front blouses, and a wide variety of brown colors.

New Yorkers are known for walking everywhere, and Sally’s choice of shoe was a wide range that included dapper brogues, leather loafers, and sturdy low-heeled boots. Her taste in clothing is practical and masculine, but when worn on her long, lean frame and fused with quirky embellishments like a silk bow tie or funny print, her look is effortless, relatable, and totally chic.

Salvatore Ferragamo’s latest fall collection was definitely inspired by the movie, with its palette of tweedy brown hues, masculine blazer and trouser combinations, long strapped leather purses, and boyish bowler hats.

Sally would have been proud.

Release your inner Sally this fall by layering your favorite boy meets girl pieces, and all you’ll need to complete the look is a stroll through a park full of gold autumn leaves.

Fall 2010 Trend: Low-Heeled Boots

PublishedAug 12th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

Nothing complements a fall wardrobe better than a good old pair of worn-in boots. Whether you prefer a grungy combat, a sleek patent pull-on, bohemian knee-high lace-ups, or a studded cowgirl, there is something out there for everyone.

Today's most popular boot is low-heeled, practical, a bit tough, and easy to transition from outfit to outfit. For example, the black leather combats that hit at the ankle aren't only reserved for the die-hard rock fans; the All-American girl can also wear them, with skinny distressed denim, a plaid blouse, and woolly knits, for a cozy countryside look.

Throw this same pair on with a pretty baby doll dress, and you've got yourself a girly grunge look Courtney Love would be proud of. Pair it with boyfriend shorts, ripped tights, and a raggedy beanie, and you've recreated the famous Alexander Wang F/W 2008 uniform that not even the fashion editors have gotten out of their heads yet.

With all the different lengths of skirts showcased at the fall shows, there is no particular style that any type of boot can't work with. Let a pair of granny lace-ups with fringed tips peek out from under a long maxi skirt, or showcase them in all their glory with a kitschy mini dress. The possibilities are endless, so choose your favorite low-heeled boot and let them do the talking (and the walking).

Anne Hathaway: Get the Look

Published Aug 10th, 2010 on The Fashion Spot

Anne Hathaway first captured our hearts as Mia Thermopolis in Disney’s The Princess Diaries, and then once again as Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada. The girl is truly Hollywood royalty, and has a cute sense of style to match. While she reaches for couture for the red carpet, her everyday street style is much more laidback and quirky.

Anne is all about layers, and keeps her striped sweaters, rugged leather boots, and cut off shorts over monotone tights in heavy rotation throughout the year. But when the heat is on full blast, she opts for fun little dresses in playful prints and color combinations that juxtapose beautifully against her pale skin tone. And never to be missing from her face are a hip pair of sunglasses in a retro or color blasted frame. Even a pair of horn-rimmed librarian glasses may make an appearance, adding more flair to her signature geek chic look.

Anne is in Scotland right now shooting her latest movie, but we can be sure to see more of her individual street threads hitting the pavement of her hometown, New York City, really soon. For now, find out how to get two of her recent looks.
